Right out of the gate, I must say that this is one of the oddest topics we have addressed in some time. Some will say that it is not a "doctrinal" issue, but I beg to differ. If the issues and events discussed on this site come to fruition, then it will end up being one of the most important doctrinal issues of the modern age...or not.
Let me explain:
I was channel surfing a few weeks ago and happened to come across someone talking on the History Channel about Francis Crick. Crick was a brilliant man and one of the lead molecular biologists that discovered the structure of the DNA molecule. As a Christian, his statement intrigued me. The speaker claimed that Crick had said, "I don't care if you say the Earth is 4 billion years old, the human genome could not have developed on its own in that amount of time. It's mathematically impossible." Chalk one up for Intelligent Design. But wait...the program immediately cuts away to one of its host/commentators who chimes in, "Therefore this is just further proof that we were put here on Earth by Ancient Aliens."
After picking my jaw up off the floor and scratching my head for a few moments, I finally convinced myself that I did hear what I thought I heard. I went on to watch the rest of the program ("Ancient Aliens") and I was hooked. Not just by some of the outlandish conclusions that were being drawn, but also because of the sheer amount of compelling evidence they were presenting. I was certainly not agreeing with everything they were saying, but they were raising some pretty valid questions.
If you are familiar with the Ancient Astronaut/Alien (AAA) Theory, you are probably also aware of the classic legends that they purport as evidence. The Pyramids, the Nazca Lines, crop circles, ancient cave drawings and the like. Obviously they are reaching on some topics, but they have some very legitimate questions in some areas. But therein lies the crux of the problem. There will always be mysteries. There will always be perplexing issues that will leave the door open for armchair forensic analysts to draw their own conclusions and bolster their personal agendas (i.e. selling books, movies, etc.).
So I felt compelled to take a look at these theories from a Christian, or Biblical perspective. Can there be a "biblical perspective" on the Ancient Alien/Astronaut Theory? Let's start with Genesis and follow up with a quote from Jesus Christ:
Genesis 6: 1-12
“Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, 2 that the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose. 3 And the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.” 4 There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown. 5 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually… 12 So God looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth. 13 And God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth.”
“And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man…”
So what was going on in the days of Noah that was going to be going on when Jesus returned (the “days of the Son of Man”)?
Violence was the main issue. God said that the earth was “filled with violence.” We think of violence as fighting and killing and such. But the root word is violation: “Doing that which is inappropriate.”
So what was going on that was so inappropriate? All we have to do is look at verses 1-4 of the sixth chapter of Genesis. The sons of God are almost always referring to Angels. In this case fallen Angels. Jude refers to them in Jude, verse 6, “And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day.”
So with all the wild claims of alien abduction, and artificial insemination and the like, could this be what we are seeing today. A resurgence of those types of “violations.”
The indication is that the aliens are not creatures from another planet, but fallen Angels from another dimension.
We are your friends!
THE GREAT DECEPTION
Funny thing...the more I thought about it, the more I realized how close the Ancient Astronaut/Alien (AAA) Theory was to the Truth. For a deception to be palatable, it has to be at least sprinkled with some form or measure of truth.
They believe that we were put here on this Earth by a superior race.
God is a superior race of One, the Supreme Being.
They believe that the AAA watch over us.
God promises to watch over us and protect and provide.
They believe that the AAA will come back again and reveal their selves to us.
Jesus said that He would come again and establish His Kingdom on the Earth.
They believe that will usher in a new era of world peace.
The 1000 Year Reign of Christ will be an unparralleled time of true physical peace.
The problem is that the counterfeit comes before the reality. Satan is allowed to present his version first, and many will be led astray by his deception.
Jesus said in Mathew 24:24, "For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect."
So what is this "Great Deception." I have long pondered that question. At first I thought it might be the theory of evolution. Then I thought maybe Mormonism or Islam. But at the rate the AAA Theory is catching on, I am beginning to wonder. Could this be the Great Deception. Could the recent UFO sightings be fallen angels? Could this be a way for Satan to deceive the entire world? Most people have not bought into the deception of evolution, or Mormonism or even Islam. But a recent survey says that for the first time in known history, a majority of people from all races all over the globe are open to the idea of an alien visitation.
So what do we do if they land here, and claim that they put us here 30,000 years ago? Or maybe they will say that they found apes and accelerated their development. What are we to do as Christians? My advice is that we will have to oppose them. They will come with great and convincing "evidence." But if our theory is correct, the "aliens" are actually fallen angels. And Satan's MO has always been to usurp God's authority and position and claim, "I will be as the Most High." What better way to step onto that throne than to convince his followers that he (Satan) is their creator?
II Thessalonians 2: 1-12 says, "Now, brethren, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, we ask you, 2 not to be soon shaken in mind or troubled, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as if from us, as though the day of Christ had come. 3 Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, 4 who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God. 5 Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things?6 And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his own time. 7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way. 8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming. 9 The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders,10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved."
So what is so dastardly about the AAA Theory? Nothing really, just the complete and totally annihilation of all that we hold dear. If the AAA are our "creators" then there is no such thing as righteousness or sin, Heaven or Hell, Angels or Demons, and therefore...no need of a Savior.
So what do we know about Angels? Not much. Angels are supernatural beings that are superior in strength and abilities to humans, but they possess nowhere near god-like powers. They can take on different forms and seem to use mechanical devices ("chariots of fire") and eat food like us.
We only know the names of two of them, Gabriel and Michael. Gabriel is a Herald Angel, as his main responsibility is to bring news about certain future events. Michael on the other hand is a Warrior Angel who does God's bidding during conflict with the Fallen Angel, Satan.
So what do we know about Satan? Not much. We know him as Satan, Lucifer, Accuser of the Brethren, the Devil, the Enemy, the Prince of the Power of the Air, the Prince of Persia and other Biblical names.
But one of the things we know for sure is:
(1) He is a liar and the father of lies. Jesus said in John 8:44, "You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it."
We also know:
(2) His greatest weapon is deception, and evidently he can change his appearance like a shape-shifter! II Corinthians 11:14 says, "And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light."
(3) His greatest weakness is his pride. Isaiah 14: 14-15 says,
"How you are fallen from heaven,
O Lucifer, son of the morning!
How you are cut down to the ground,
You who weakened the nations!
13 For you have said in your heart:
‘I will ascend into heaven,
I will exalt my throne above the stars of God;
I will also sit on the mount of the congregation
On the farthest sides of the north;
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds,
I will be like the Most High.’
15 Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol,
To the lowest depths of the Pit."
He even tempted Jesus to worship him in Matthew 4:8-10, "Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve."
(4) But where does he dwell? He evidently has access to Heaven. Job 1:6 says, "Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them."
But his primary domain is outer space. Ephesians 2:1-2 says, "And God made you alive, who were once dead in trespasses and sins, 2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience"
Ephesians 6:12 says, "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."
Evidently there are some type of angelic wars or conflict in space. Daniel 10:12 says, "Do not fear, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand, and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard; and I have come because of your words. 13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days; and behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left alone there with the kings of Persia. 14 Now I have come to make you understand what will happen to your people in the latter days, for the vision refers to many days yet to come.”
So God sends this angel to help Daniel, but Lucifer (Prince of Persia) fights him and the angel eventually calls on Michael for backup. Sounds like sci-fi!
So to summarize, we see that Satan is a prideful deceiver who would love nothing more than to usurp God's throne, claim to be the Creator, and demand to be worshipped. The very thing that got him kicked out of Heaven. What better way for him to achieve his goals than to stage a great galactic deception by coming back to the earth as an "alien" and claim that he is our actual Creator. The world would drop to their knees in awe and fear.
Ironically, if Satan does take this tact, it would also allow him to "upstage" the Second Coming of Christ. Acts 1: 9-11 says, "Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, 11 who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven."
Revelation 1:7 also says, "Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him."
So what better way for Satan to attempt to mock God than to mimic Jesus' triumphant return to Earth and claim to be the Creator?
CONCLUSIONS AND THEORIES
So what do we do with the AAA theory? It is probably just a bunch of baloney that some hucksters dreamed up to make money. But, could it be true? Not from a Biblical standpoint, no. But, could the Ancient Alien lie be a fulfillment of Biblical prophecy? It most certainly could be, with the emphasis on the "could."
Do I personally think this will be the case? 20 years ago I would have laughed it off as the psychotic meanderings of some religious lunatic...but the winds of change are blowing and it smells like smoke (and mirrors) and where there's smoke, there's fire, possibly hell fire.
So our course has not, will not and must not change. Ultimately Satan will fail at whatever his great deception is, whether it's Ancient Aliens, Islam or evolution. But just like we the church, have had to take a stand against those lies, this will be no different. So open your eyes to the skies. Jesus will be returning soon, but first comes the counterfeit. Are you ready to defend?
