As with many ethical or social-spiritual issues, the majority of people form their opinions based on societal norms. What is “normal” today, may have been an aberration a decade ago. The American Psychological Association used to classify homosexuality as a psychological disorder, but now considers it simply as an alternative lifestyle or a personal preference.
Unfortunately, this secular perspective has crept into the Church, with many people who claim to be Believers, adopting the homosexual agenda’s perspective on marriage and sexual normalcy. Most people who claim to be believers, but reject the Biblical perspective on the issue, have never even read what the Bible says on the topic. Many who have studied the topic from a Scriptural perspective, have tried to dismiss the verses that condemn sexual immorality as being “misinterpreted.”
The reality is that the Bible addresses most issues of human sexuality quite clearly, and sometimes quite graphically. God uses words that many find to be offensive, like “shameful,” “unnatural,” “unclean,” “lust,” “vile,” “error,” “debased,” “unrighteous,” “wickedness“ “evil” and “immoral” to describe what society deems as an “alternative lifestyle."
Everything is now upsidedown. Just like when Isaiah said, "What sorrow for those who say that evil is good and good is evil, that dark is light and light is dark, that bitter is sweet and sweet is bitter" (Isaiah 5:20). Sounds like our current culture. In Judges 17:6, we read how that happens: "The people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes." Everyone had their own "truth.”
But the Apostle Paul warned the young Timothy to: “Study, to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the Word of Truth.”
Unfortunately, many people who call themselves Christians don’t study, and therefore know very little about the Bible and consequently believe whatever they hear. That can be very dangerous, depending on the source of your information.
If all you ever listen to are secular sources (radio, TV, internet) you will end up with a secular perspective. If your source is the Word of God, you cannot be led astray by the changing winds of society. Some Believers get their opinions from Christian radio and television, but even that is not infallible.
Some Believers claim to be “too busy” to study His Word, some are more honest and admit to a lack of desire or even laziness. Some actually avoid studying because they fear that their opinions are opposed to God’s and they prefer the adage that “Ignorance is Bliss.” In reality, ignorance is dangerous.
The Bible is replete with declarations of the trustworthiness of God’s Word, but none so elegant and comprehensive as the 119th Psalm. In it, David declared:
Psalm 119:105 “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
Psalm 119:11 “Thy Word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”
Psalm 119:160 “Thy Word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endures for ever.”
“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”
In addition, Jesus , in John 14:23 also declared , “Anyone who truly loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.”
So we see that God not only wants us to know His Will, He expects us to conform to it. Obedience is not something that comes naturally. We do not naturally obey the laws of the land. We all tend to go 40 MPH in a 35 MPH zone.
As parents, we all teach our children what is right and wrong, and in turn, we expect them to respect and obey those standards. But obedience is not just what WE expect from OUR children, but it is also what GOD expects from HIS children.
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
The world will fill your mind full of all kinds of garbage. God tells us to cleanse our mind of secular perspectives and embrace His Word, His Will and His Love. But God is not just a God of love, but also a God of justice. If our perspective of Him is slanted, we can come up with a God who is either a wishy-washy philanthropist or a mean-spirited, judgmental taskmaster. He is neither. If you are a parent, He is like you. He wants what is best for His children and He lets them know what is right and wrong, and expects His children to honor His Standards. Just like you, He rewards good behavior and punishes bad behavior. The big difference is, His “timeouts” last for an eternity.
What does God say about human sexuality?
The following are just a few verses that codify God’s general perspective on human sexuality. Remember, you are reading Scripture, not an editorial or just someone’s opinion.
If you are a secular humanist, you are not expected to understand or embrace the Biblical perspective on this topic. But, if you claim to be a Believer, this is your Source for all Truth. It is your prerogative to agree or disagree with what God says, but finding yourself opposing God on any topic usually leads to the slippery slope of unbelief. The danger of disagreeing with God is you eventually may loose your faith altogether, simply because you refused to submit your will to His.
We will first take a brief look at sexual immorality in general, then homosexuality specifically.
1 Corinthians 6:18 “Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body.”
1 Thessalonians 4:3 “For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality.”
Galatians 5:24 “And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”
Romans 6:12 “Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts.”
Galatians 5:16 “Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”
Ephesians 2:3 “We all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath.”
2 Timothy 2:22 “Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”
1 Peter 4:3 “For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles—when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries.”
Galatians 5:16-25 “So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”
Leviticus 2:13 “If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable.”
I Corinthians 6:9-11
“Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, (*“catamite”) nor homosexuals (**sodomites), 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.”
*a catamite is a man who plays the female in an act of anal intercourse with another male
**a sodomite is a man who plays the male in an act of anal intercourse with another male
"Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. 27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.
28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; 32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.
Sodom and Gomorrah
The Bible clearly teaches that God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah for sexual immorality. Some liberal Christians deny that. One such gay "Christian" activist, Matthew Vine, has dedicated his life to proving that there is nothing wrong with him performing oral or anal sex on another man. If you click on his name, you can see his video and read the transcript.
He is a gifted scripture twister and likes to pick and choose the verses he "explains." The easy thing to do is study the issue for yourself. Vine says God destoyed S&G for a "lack of hospitality." But Jude says in verse 7, "In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding townsgave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire." Clearly, they were destroyed because of "sexual immorality and perversion."
The reality is that God first made a man and woman and set the standard for what is appropriate sexuality. Jesus reiterated this in Matthew 19:4, "Have you not read that in the beginning, God made them male and female, and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh."
Check out your plumbing, folks. That’s why you screw the "male" end of a pipe into the "female" end of a pipe. Two male ends or two female ends won’t work. God designed you that way. That’s why homosexuals cannot reproduce. It’s not an act of love or God that gets a lesbian impregnated. It’s an act of science…that’s why it is called “artificial” insemination. There is nothing natural about it.
What should be our response?
So with these scriptures in mind, what are we to do with sexual immorality within the Church?
The Apostle Paul addresses that question quite succinctly in I Corinthians 5:
“It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife. 2 And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning and have put out of your fellowship the man who has been doing this? 3 For my part, even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit. As one who is present with you in this way, I have already passed judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus on the one who has been doing this. 4 So when you are assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present, 5 hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.
6 Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough? 7 Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. 8 Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old bread leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
9 I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— 10 not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. 11 But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.
12 What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? 13 God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.”
Paul is saying that sexual immorality is wicked (bent, unnatural) and we must kick that person out of the Church, until they repent. Instead, the Corinthians were “proud” and boasting of their tolerance of this man’s sexual immorality.
If a man’s house is on fire you do him no favors by indifferently walking away. Your apathy will lead to his destruction. Instead, you go to the man and inform him of his predicament, by yelling “Fire!” So when you see a man who believes he is walking in God’s Grace, but he is actually walking is blatant sin, you have a duty to inform him of his perilous position. Paul even admonishes us to “expel” him.
It’s like getting expelled from school. You either adhere to the school’s policies or you are separated from those who do adhere. It is to get your attention. Doing drugs in school is not tolerated and there are consequences. Usually, you are given a warning, then detention, then a temporary expulsion, then a permanent expulsion.
Paul says to warn a carnal believer to repent. If they will not listen, then expel them temporarily. If they repent, welcome them back into the fold. If they refuse to repent, you are not to have any fellowship with them at all. In this particular case, we read in II Corinthians that the man did repent, and Paul said to welcome him back into fellowship.
But today’s church wants to “love” them into the kingdom. That is a secular perspective. If you truly love them, then love them enough to let them know that their house is on fire. We have to understand that today’s homosexuals have been embolden to believe that there is nothing wrong with their lifestyle and that there is no need for repentance. When you declare your “love” for them and invite them to participate with your church, you are in direct conflict with what the Bible says. Their rhetoric demands that we accept their lifestyle as "normal" and to do otherwise is "hate." The truth is, that while we are to hate the sin and love the sinner, we also cannot condone their behavior or cower at their accusations of "hate." Just because we refuse to bow to society's pressure to accept their aberrant behavior as being normal, does not constitute hate.
That's why the church is against homosexual marriage. We know that it is unnatural and the Scriptures clearly condemn all acts of homosexuality. But it's a slippery slope, too. Once marriage is redefined to include same sex couples, then there will be no end to the debauchery. Eventually it will lead to the legality of multiple individuals being "married" (polygamy) and even stranger combos like two men and three woman being married. But it won't stop there. People will eventually want to marry their dog, and society will have no reason to deny their request.
We may not like what God says about a given topic, but as Believers, we do not have the right to determine what is right and wrong, if our opinion is opposed to what He clearly reveals in His Word. The Bible is not a smorgasbord where we get to pick and choose what we like. We either embrace His Word wholeheartedly, in its entirety, or reject it out of hand. There is no middle ground where we get to be the final court of arbitration and decide what's valid and what's not.
As Believers, we are not put here on Earth to offer our personal opinions. Instead we are to offer the world the Light of God's Word. He is the sun and we are the moon, we have no light of our own. We can only reflect His Light. As His disciples declared in John 6, "You alone have the words of Life." He is the Safe Harbor, we are just the lighthouse pointing the lost to their Savior. Offering our opinions instead of His Word is like giving a man in the desert a glass full of salt instead of His Water.
All sexual immorality is wrong, whether it is lust, pornography, fornication or homosexuality. And we all struggle with these issues in one form or fashion. But the issue is temptation versus commision. To be tempted is not a sin. The fact that we have to fight against lust is not wrong. With the internet, pornography is at our fingertips 24/7. There's not a man under 90 years old that does not struggle with that issue to some degree. The problem is that every time you give in, your faith gets weaker and your flesh gets stronger. So we must resolve to to walk in the Spirit and not in the flesh. Daily we must trust God to make us strong in our fight.
Oddly, the fight is both spiritual and chemical. The very hormones that God put in us to cause us to procreate, are the very same chemicals that can lead to our demise. So it comes down to a choice: Do you want the endorphins or a relationship with your Creator. Raging hormones can seemingly yell louder than the still, small voice of God whispering to our hearts to stay pure.
Who is following whom?
It all comes down to Jesus. Who is Jesus in your life? Many claim Him as their Savior, but few submit to Him as their Lord. That’s called “fire insurance.” You don’t want to go to hell, but you’re not quite in tune with the whole “obedience” thing. Walking the fence is a perilous position that rarely has a pleasant ending. One foot in the world and one foot in the church is called being lukewarm.
Jesus said inRevelation 3:15, “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see. 19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. 20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me. 21 To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”
So His advice is clear: be on fire for the Lord! Embrace all that He has for you! Study and believe His Word! Reject the world’s standards and embrace His Standards!
Life is too short to learn everything the hard way!
John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. 18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.”
Some have written and accused this article of being "homophobic." A phobia is a fear. No one here fears homosexuals.
They have also accused us of being "hateful." No one here hates homosexuals. This article is simply stating what the Bible says about homosexuality. If you have a problem with the article, you have a problem with God, not the author of the article.
If you choose to be a homosexual, that is between you and God.
If you choose to be ignorant of what God deems as right or wrong, that, too, is between you and God. All I ask is, please don't shoot the messager.
The Apostle Paul told us to speak the truth in Love. There is no hate in Truth, but there could be consequences if you rejects God's Word and make up your own "truth." Judges 17:6 says, "Every man did whatever was right in his own eyes." In other words, there were no standards. Do whatever you please. When the cat's away, the mice will play.
But the Bible says:
Romans 14:12 "So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God."
Hebrews 4:13 "Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the Eyes of Him to whom we must give account."
1 Peter 4:5 "But they will have to give account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead."
So do we hate homosexuals? Absolutely not! We love them enough to "speak the Truth" that they are not walking according to God's Word.
